There's a strong Prime Directive angle to the plot-can we investigate this mystery at all without impacting the local culture?-which gives the proceedings a wonderfully TNG feel.

The story goes full noir with the characterization of the alien detective and the carful of thugs who try to drive the PCs off the road, but it never feels cheesy, and that moment of action does a good job of breaking up what is otherwise a very cerebral adventure.

We've got multiple suspects with plausible motivations, we've got clues and red herrings, we've got several methods of investigation that will yield different information all pushing to the same conclusion. This adventure pulls it off with flying colors. My Thoughts: I mentioned earlier that a good mystery scenario is hard to write. The Premise: When a member of a Federation observation team on an almost warp-capable planet is killed, the crew must erase the evidence that he was ever there, investigate the killing as a possible murder, and somehow preserve the Prime Directive in the process. Definitely a great starting point, but would need some serious massaging if it were to show up at my table.

What if a ship from the past had gotten stuck in the time dilation effect? What if one of the Federation's enemies were trying to subject this technology for their own ends? Also, the editing in this one is incongruously much weaker than the other adventures I've read, with both poorer sentence writing and a few obvious typos/grammatical errors. I can't help feeling like there's a massive missed opportunity here. Where this all falls apart is in the plot: once first contact has been established with the Brain via its avatar Mercury, the solution amounts to asking it very nicely to change course (and bonus points if you can direct it to a different place from which to draw resources). The adventure allows for Science rolls to determine the solution, but I'd be tempted to make the players work them out themselves-you're doing a Star Trek game, someone at the table is going to be able to recognize a Fibonacci sequence.

I also love how the Brain tests the sentience of the crew with real-world math patterns. That's awesome, and it feels very Star Trek. It's clear that the author of this module has endless love for the concept of the Matryoshka Brain-most of the adventure is spent just reveling in the sheer wonder of the thing. My Thoughts: Gosh this is such a cool sci-fi thing for the crew to interact with. Can they convince this so-called Matryoshka Brain to divert its course away from a fledgling Federation colony? The Premise: The crew stumble upon an enormous, mobile cloud of interlinked computers simulating a vast universe within. Today's reviews bring us two alien cultures, one so advanced as to appear to us as gods, the other just pushing into the science of warp travel. Don't mind if I do.īut seriously, thanks for this list.
